Omega-3 Fatty Acids Prevent Colon Cancer

Fish oil, which contains high-levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, have been shown to cut incidences of colon cancer by 12 percent according to a meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Furthermore, for each extra 100 g of fish consumed the incidence of colon cancer was reduced an additional 3 percent. However, fears about polluted waters and fish with high levels of pollutants, such as, mercury have made the option of omega-3 fish oil supplements an attractive alternative.

Fish Oil Fights Against Child Allergies

Omega-3 fatty acids seem to significantly reduce allergies in children. A study from Linkoping University in Sweden looked at one year olds whose mothers consumed high-dose fish oil supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The results, of the double blind study, showed that these children had fewer than half of as many allergic reactions to eggs than the placebo group. Eggs were used in the study because allergic reactions to eggs in children have been shown to have a strong correlation with developing allergic disorders like eczema and asthma later in life.

Woman who are trying to get pregnant, currently are pregnant or are breast-feeding should eat 12 ounces of fish a week in a recent recommendation by experts. Evidence is showing that the omega-3 fatty acids help both the women and their babies. The omega-3s help prevent postpartum depression for the mother and help the babies who need the omega-3 DHA and EPA for brain and motor skill development.

A new Australian study reported that children should be eating five times more fish and other food rich in omega-3s than they are consuming now. Scientific research is continually uncovering major roles for long chain Omega-3s in growth and development, cardiovascular disease, mental and behavioural health, diabetes and inflammatory diseases. In addition, it's recommended that omega-3 fatty acids be used in combination to traditional treatment of children with developmental brain disorders and learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia.
